“Dr. Stine’s book From Expertise to Impact reads as a conversational-style handbook for helping individuals from STEM disciplines to better understand how policy influences them and how they might in turn use their expertise to influence policy. I appreciated the thoughtful layout of the book and the various anecdotes at the beginning of each chapter that helped set the scene for that chapter’s specific content. One specific anecdote that stuck out to me was when Stein relates an encounter with an economist. The economist asked people to consider all the societal issues in the world and then think about their own personal income. After doing that, they were then asked to consider that if they knew for sure that climate change was going to occur, what percentage of their income they’d individually contribute to combat it. For me, it’s tempting to view policy suggestions as primarily data driven, but we should always remember that the policies in place affect people, including us, and that these policies require resources to implement, often our own resources, even if distantly. Even going through the work to devise and outline various policy options requires an investment of someone’s time. I also appreciated the reminders sprinkled throughout the book that data will only get you so far, that human interaction, behavior, and politics are all critical pieces of the policy pie too. As a reader who knew next to nothing about science policy but was interested in learning more, this book felt like a great bird’s eye view of what that world looks like, and I would recommend it to anyone who’s interested in getting a practical view.”

Second, I appreciated the organization of the text. Introducing the ten science and technology policy analysis steps and then going through each of those steps in the following chapters made the text easy to follow. Third, the real-life examples and thought exercises made the concepts come alive and actionable. Communicating common obstacles will help reader not make similar mistakes. I look forward to teaching my students with this textbook! “I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed the personal examples of policy engagement (or lack thereof) debbie included from her own life as well as how helpful of a guide this book is. I really liked the 4 Es efficiency, effectiveness, equity and ease of political acceptability. While, I was aware of each of these components before this book I didnt have the language to explain it. And personally, I plan to start intentionally thinking of the 4 Es and seeing how I can incorporate them in my own science policy writing. The book clearly lays out a framework for creating science policy which is helpful for those new to the field but also those who are already in the field. It gives people a chance to evaluate their own work and look for areas for growth. All around, I enjoyed the writing style, the practice segments, and the tips found in this book.”
